New online selection tool for agricultural softwareWednesday 25th March 2009 | 6:14 AM« Back to ListingWith the click of a button, Australian farmers can now choose the right business software thanks to the launch of an interactive selection tool by SoftwareShortlist.com
Building on an 18 month research study conducted by Queensland's Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F), the free online tool makes it easy for primary producers to select and compare relevant farm software. Available at www.softwareshortlist.com/industry/agriculture_forestry_fishing.html, the selection tool represents a powerful combination of government research and private sector ingenuity. "Farmers needed a better way to choose software - they couldn't possibly review all available products. With this new tool, they can build a short list of the most relevant software for their situation," said Craig Westcott, co-founder of SoftwareShortlist.com. "It's great that private companies have taken our research and used it to create a whole new agri-support industry," said JoAnn Resing, the DPI&F officer responsible for the study. The original DPI&F study, published as The Australian Farmer's Guide to Software, was Australia's first agribusiness software database and included more than 600 products. In the agricultural sector, SoftwareShortlist's interactive selection tool currently focuses on livestock record keeping. Alliance partners are now being sought to help expand the service to other types of farm software, such as farm accounting, crop recordkeeping, mapping, etc. This would involve the review and setup of products on the website, together with agreed marketing and community-building activities, in return for a profit share. SoftwareShortlist's software selection service will also be available across other industries. "We aim to create a powerful tool which small businesses everywhere can use to find the right software, whatever their industry, size or budget," said Westcott.
